T-SAR has just taken possession of what will be the first centre piece of our growing capability. When Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Detachment 535 takes to the water next spring, they will do so in a fast and steady 4 ton Pursuit 2870.
It is some nine metres (30 feet) long and capable of over 42 knots in speed, and can accept all the fittings we will need for safety gear, marine radios and other items needed in a SAR boat. We expect to do great things with it.
The boat has been acquired and surveyed, and deemed suitable for the search and rescue tasks that will be demanded of it. T-SAR has several people to thank for finding the boat and letting us have it at a very generous price. However, the immediate task at hand has been to lay it up properly for the winter. We can thank the Toronto Port Authority for their generosity, as both of our rescue boats are now stored at the Outer Harbour Marina.
While a number of names suggested themselves, practicality won out and the boat will be named for its call sign 'T-SAR-2'.
